Malek Mohamed Awny, an Egyptian journalist, will discuss his first-hand experiences covering recent revolutionary events in the Arab world.

Amy Letter, Assistant Professor of Fiction and New Media, will host a reading of her own work on Wednesday, Oct. 26 as part of Drake's Writers and Critics Series.

"A Prairie Home Companion" host Garrison Keillor will speak at Drake's Knapp Center on Tuesday, October 25, at 7 p.m. as part of the Martin Bucksbaum Distinguished Lecture series.

Drake's 18th annual Halloween Hoops celebration will be held on Monday, October 31, from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Drake University Bell Center, 1421-27th St. The event is free and open to Des Moines area children aged 3-12 and their parents.

Drake University has declared Oct. 22 "DU Good Day," a day of service for alumni in central Iowa and across the country. DU Good Day activities will occur at a dozen sites nationwide, as hundreds of Drake alumni, family and friends donate their time to hunger-related causes in their communities.

Author Patricia Bryan will discuss her book "The Midnight Assassin: A Murder in America's Heartland" at 7 p.m. October 20. The event, which will take place in Drake University's Cowles Library Reading Room, 2725 University Ave., is free and open to the public.

Retired U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Dennis McGinn will speak Thursday at 7 p.m. about renewable energy and national security in Bulldog Theater in Olmsted Center.
