Drake University welcomed a total of more than 1,300 students into the ranks of alumni this past weekend during three ceremonies marking the commencement rites of passage.

Drake University has awarded its highest teaching award to Stuart Klugman, the Principal Financial Group distinguished professor of actuarial science.

Drake University has awarded its highest mentorship award, the 2007 Madelyn M. Levitt Mentor of the Year Award, to Lon Larson, the Ellis and Nelle Levitt professor of pharmacy administration.

Ugandan-born Jimmy Senteza, Drake associate professor of finance, has spent two years organizing a travel seminar for Drake students. It involves a 23-day journey to Uganda; they leave Des Moines on Tuesday, May 15.

Lauren Smith, who just completed her term as Drake student body president for 2006-07, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to fund a 13-month English teaching assistantship in South Korea.

As gas prices continue to skyrocket, Drake Law School will host a symposium in partnership with the Association of Patent Law Firms that will convene internationally renowned scholars and experts on the increasingly relevant topic of renewable energy and alternative fuels.

Applications are due for a free political reporting seminar to be presented June 4-6.

Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Marsha K. Ternus will return to her alma mater to give the commencement address at Drake Law School’s 126th commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. Friday, May 11.

Approximately 650 seniors will be honored at Drake’s 126th Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday. Drake will present James Autry, renowned author and retired Meredith Corp. executive, with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

Drake’s 126th Commencement Ceremony for Graduate and Doctoral Degree Recipients will recognize approximately 560 graduate students.
