More than 80 students, faculty and staff joined the Backstrom family for a memorial service today on Drake's campus.

Iowa State professor Adam Heffernan is guest director of this contemporary play by Maria Irene Fornes.

The final performances is set for 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Hall.

The opening reception is set for 5 to 7 p.m.

There will be an opportunity to view stellar objects through telescopes after the presentation.

Jean Wilson will present "Calligraphy and Penmanship" at 2 p.m.

Presentations will focus on the Iowa Core initiative that aims to improve literacy, mathematics, science, social studies and 21st century skills.

Andrew Porter, winner of Drake's Emerging Writer Award in Short Fiction, will read from his prose at 7:30 p.m. in the Cowles Reading Room.

Rod Henshaw will serve a one-year term and Drake will host the group's annual conference in 2011.
