Sexual Assault Awareness Month educates on harassment, human trafficking, and prison violence

According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Justice, between 20 and 25 percent of women will experience a completed or attempted rape during their college career. Drake’s Office for Sexual Violence Response, the UNICEF student organization, and the Women’s Studies Program plan to raise campus awareness of these serious issues during Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in April. Anne Murr honored as a 2013 Hero of the Heartland

Anne Murr, coordinator of the Adult Literacy Center at Drake University, has been recognized as a 2013 Hero of the Heartland by the American Red Cross of Greater Iowa. Murr was honored this morning at a breakfast ceremony at the Hy-Vee Conference Center in West Des Moines, Iowa. Natalie Schmitz, Drake University pharmacy student, and Andrea Kjos, assistant professor of Social and Administrative Pharmacy, are recent recipients of the Walmart Scholars award. Schmitz and Kjos were selected by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) among 85 student-mentor pairs to participate in a competitive national program at the AACP Annual Meeting July 13–17, 2013 in Chicago, Ill. Drake students receive grants that help Des Moines community

Drake students Madison Johansen and Kelcy Smith received grants for their service learning projects under the advisement of Mandi McReynolds, service-learning coordinator at Drake University. Johansen, a sophomore majoring in environmental policy, received a $457 grant from Youth Service America and Sodexo for the “Greater Des Moines Urban Youth Learning Garden” project. This project is a platform for meeting critical community needs in the areas of environmental responsibility education and access to locally grown produce among selected populations. Des Moines Symphony partners with Drake to celebrate 75th anniversary

Nearly 300 musicians from Drake University will perform in the Des Moines Symphony as the ensemble celebrates its 75th anniversary concert “Celebrating All Things Drake!” on April 13-14. Because Drake played a significant role in the founding and development of the symphony, which initially began as the Drake/Des Moines Symphony, the concert will feature Drake musicians and honor this important partnership.
