SJMC Monday Memo

“Joy is shorthand for the beginning of anything new. It includes curiosity, spontaneity, and not-knowing.”
— Author Neal Allen

Rebuilding our community — together

After more than a year of pandemic cocooning, many of us will venture back to campus next fall to rebuild our community and connections. What will our “new normal” look like? What would you like to see at Drake in the fall? Are there any particular in-person community-building events you’d like us to host? What pandemic-inspired innovations would you like to see continue? Shoot an email to Dean Kathleen Richardson (kathleen.richardson@drake.edu) or Associate Dean Kelly Bruhn (kelly.bruhn@drake.edu) with any ideas.

Alumni news

Susanna Hayward, JO’16, received a shoutout at the recent 2021 American Society of Magazine Editors Ellie Awards, the National Magazine Awards for Print and Digital Media. Susanna designed the story that won the Ellie for Personal Service. She is the associate art director for Marie Claire and designed the winning story “Invasion of Privacy: Marie Claire‘s Guide to Protecting Yourself Online,” edited by Megan DiTrolio.

Reminder

Enter your work in the Emmy contest: The Upper Midwest Emmy Foundation has reopened entries for the pandemic-delayed student production awards. Entries submitted now will roll over into next year’s competition. The two-year eligibility period is for work produced for class or school media platforms between Jan. 1, 2020 and Dec. 31, 2021. Find awards rules and categories here: https://midwestemmys.org/student-awards/

Report your Covid vaccination: All members of the Drake community are encouraged to help alleviate the threat of the pandemic by getting vaccinated. And, once you are fully vaccinated, please report that to the University. Required campus safety protocols in the fall — including mask wearing and social distancing — will be determined by how many people on campus are vaccinated. The sooner everyone gets vaccinated, the sooner we can loosen restrictions. Take photos of your vaccination card and email to contacttracing@drake.edu. All Hy-Vee pharmacies are now offering COVID vaccinations without appointments.
