Drake University Law School welcomes Judge Arthur E. Gamble as the new Judge in Residence. Born and raised in Des Moines, IA, he earned an undergraduate degree and law degree from the University of Iowa. After graduating from law school with distinction in 1978, he practiced law at an area firm in civil litigation until his judicial appointment in 1983. Judge Gamble served the Fifth Judicial District of Iowa as assistant chief judge from 1990 to 1995. He then served as chief judge for the district from 1995 until his retirement in 2019. He is now a senior judge.
Judge Gamble is president emeritus of the C. Edwin Moore American Inn of Court and past president of the Iowa Judges Association. In 2018, he received the prestigious American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the Eighth Circuit.
“I am very excited about the opportunity to serve as Judge in Residence at Drake Law School. I hope to provide substance to the program, and am particularly looking forward to sharing my experience as a judge with the students who participate in clinical programs. Any students at Drake Law School, not just those in the Drake Legal Clinic, are welcome to visit me at my office in the Neal and Bea Smith Law Center on campus,” said Judge Gamble. Judge Gamble’s office is in a dedicated judicial suite in the 40,000-square-foot Neal and Bea Smith Law Center that houses the law school’s clinical programs.
The Judge in Residence Program at Drake Law School is an opportunity for Iowa jurists to serve as a resource to students, faculty, and staff. Throughout the academic year, the Judge in Residence participates in academic programming including the First Year Trial Practicum, internship seminar, and other experiential learning offerings. Additionally, the Judge in Residence may hold trial proceedings in the legal clinic courtroom, which is an official courtroom of Iowa’s fifth judicial district.
Judge Gamble will hold regular office hours on Fridays between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. Students are welcome to visit during those hours, or by appointment. Judge Gamble is also available to guest lecture or visit classes.
