Religion journalist to speak at Drake
The Comparison Project, a Drake-based initiative that sponsors programming about global religions, is offering its first event of the academic year. Kenneth Woodward, former religion editor at Newsweek magazine, will deliver a lecture titled “Miracles as Stories.” The lecture will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at Sussman Theater in the Olmsted Center. Woodward is the author of two books on miracles: “The Book of Miracles: The Meaning of the Miracle Stories in Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam” and “Making Saints: How the Catholic Church Determines Who Becomes a Saint, Who Doesn’t, and Why.”
Documentary by Drake alum debuts at Telluride Film Festival
“Ghost Fleet,” a documentary about slavery in the Thai fishing industry co-produced by 1976 SJMC alum Jon Bowermaster, was among the 33 films selected for this weekend’s Telluride Film Festival.
The film, directed by Shannon Service and Jeff Waldron — and produced by Service and Bowermaster — documents the efforts of a Thai activist to rescue men enslaved on the fishing boats that provide the world’s seafood. “Ghost Fleet” will also appear at the Toronto International Film Festival (Sept. 8-15), the Hamptons International Film Festival (Oct. 4-7) and Woodstock Film Festival (Oct. 10-15).
Bowermaster is a National Geographic adventure journalist, environmental activist and founder of Ocean 8 Films.

Writing Workshop to open Sept. 10
The Drake Writing Workshop will open Monday, Sept. 10. The workshop offers free help with writing and editing.
DESCRIPTION OF THE WRITING WORKSHOP: The workshop is staffed by peer tutors, all of whom have taken at least one course to train them and familiarize them with writing theory and pedagogy. Tutors help students identify areas of difficulty and work with them on a range of issues including fluency, organization, development, analysis and argument. Tutors also help students copy edit their work as needed. Tutors do NOT write papers for students, nor do they simply act as proofreaders. All work on development and copy reading takes place within the context of the student’s own writing.
HOW TO SIGN UP: The online address for student sign-up page site is https://library.drake.edu/writing. This site is also linked to the English website. The website itself will give students directions on how to proceed. Typically, an appointment is for one half hour. Students can sign up for more than one session if they choose. They may also request that a tutor keep a regular time slot available for them if they would like to come in each week. For more information, call the Writing Workshop at 515-271-4712.
LOCATION: The Writing Workshop is located in Cowles Library, Room 47, on the lower level. Tutoring sessions are offered:
• Monday through Friday during the day
• Monday through Thursday during the evening
• Saturday afternoon
• Sunday afternoon and evening
Electronic checkout workers needed
More paid work-study students are needed for the SJMC’s electronic media checkout service. The checkout service is open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, and 2-7 p.m. Sundays. Afternoon shifts starting at noon are largely available, as is Sunday 5-7 p.m. Contact SJMC multimedia engineer Ray Fredregill (ray.fredregill@drake.edu) if you are interested.
Meredith Hall building hours policy for 2018-19
Meredith Hall is unlocked during the following hours when classes are in session:
Sunday: 7:30 a.m.-9 p.m.
Monday-Friday: 7 a.m.-9:30 p.m.
Saturday: 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
Students with SJMC majors can swipe into the building with a Drake ID even when the building is locked from 7 a.m.-2 a.m., Sunday-Thursday. Students who are already in the building when it is automatically locked are allowed to stay in the building. Students who need 24/7 access to swipe into the building should talk to their faculty member or adviser about how to obtain all-hours access.
