The following message was sent to the campus community from President Marty Martin on Thursday, June 15.

It is with a heavy heart that I send this message. Madeleine “Maddy” Maxwell, the wife of President Emeritus David Maxwell, has passed away at the age of 78. She leaves behind her husband, David, and their two sons, Justin and Stephen. Together, David and Maddy served Drake University for 16 years. In that time, Maddy earned many titles and accolades, from being dubbed hostess-in-chief for her welcoming and creative spirit to being named to the “Women of Influence: Class of 2009” by the Des Moines Business Record for her outstanding contributions to Drake and the community.

For those who had the opportunity and privilege to meet Maddy, you’ll remember her innovative ideas and imagination, her humor and wit, and her commitment to helping others feel welcome. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Maddy had a highly successful career as an illustrator, designer, creative director and, ultimately, as the owner of her own boutique creative firm. She came to Des Moines in 1999 when David was named president of Drake University.

As the University’s first lady, Maddy worked tirelessly to bring the campus and community together in as many ways as possible. She was known for orchestrating many events, from intimate get togethers to large gatherings, drawing students, faculty, staff, alumni, members of the community, and visitors from around the world together to celebrate and advance Drake.

Beyond her extensive involvement in campus activities, Maddy also traveled on behalf of the University to visit with alumni and friends of Drake, and to attend a variety of Drake events. She was very active in the Greater Des Moines community, sharing her enthusiasm and talents with a broad range of nonprofit and community-service organizations. Maddy was a true servant-leader, and she lived a life devoted to transforming lives and strengthening communities. Maddy truly exemplified everything Drake stands for—her legacy will live on through our core values.

I send my deepest condolences to the Maxwell family and know the rest of the Drake community joins me in doing so. Maddy’s thoughtfulness, bright personality, and commitment to Drake will never be forgotten. If you would like to make a gift in remembrance of Maddy, the family asks that they be made to Drake University or the Animal Rescue League of Central Iowa.

Sincerely,

Marty Martin
President, Drake University
