Join Drake PR’s Global CEPR recognition celebration

Mark your calendar for Wednesday, Nov. 3, from noon to 1:30 p.m. as PR leaders from around the globe gather in real time to honor the 2020 and 2021 Certification in Education for Public Relations (CEPR) recipients, including the Drake University PR program! The SJMC community will meet in Mer. 124C for pizza and celebration. Drake will be featured at approximately 12:25 p.m., and we’d love to have a large crowd of students participate in the awards ceremony. Please join us to celebrate Drake’s recognition as one of the top PR programs in the world!

PRSSA hosting experts in event PR

The nationally recognized Drake chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSSA) will meet virtually on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. CDT. The meeting will feature the following guest speakers:

Free BEA memberships for students

Undergraduate students with an active interest in electronic media or other multimedia enterprises related to research and creative endeavors are eligible for free memberships in the Broadcast Education Association.  

  1. Go to: https://bea.memberclicks.net/studentmembership 
  2. Go to the New User section and enter your email – and click Register.  NOTE: If you get a message that says you already have an email in use, got to Existing Users – enter your email and click Forgot Password.
  3. Fill out the application.
  4. On the Summary page, enter the Discount Code: MUGS-6F34SM and then click Apply.
  5. Congratulations!  You’re a BEA Student Member!

The scholarship process is available for online application. BEA is awarding over $30,000 this year. Click here to watch a video to hear about the process and find out about other opportunities for students in the next year.  

RADIO SHOW STUDENT SCHOLAR PROGRAM
Virtual Event on Nov. 4
BEA produces a program called the Radio Show Student Scholar Program, now a virtual event. The two-hour event features educational content geared towards students, through mentor match-ups and a group executive session.

Iowa Newspaper Association offers scholarships

The Iowa Newspaper Association offers scholarships for students interested in newspaper careers. Apply online at www.inanews.com.

“Alumni” news

Dorothy Pisarski, emerita professor of advertising, was selected as the sole woman assigned as an off-ice official in Iowa City when the Iowa Wild meet the Rockford Ice Hogs for two exhibition games to celebrate the grand opening of an ECHL franchise at XTreme Arena, Oct 7-8. Pisarski also is a longtime local soccer referee.

Reminder: Apply for ASME internship

The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) summer internship program pairs roughly 30 students from across the U.S. with brands in Washington, D.C. and New York City. Eligible students will have completed their junior year by June 2022 and must be willing to spend the summer — early June to early August 2022 — in New York City or Washington, D.C. Previous experience as an intern for a publication or with a campus magazine is preferred. 

To apply, you must submit your PDF application to Professor Inman via email or link to jeff.inman@drake.edu by 5 p.m. CDT Oct. 15, 2021. Your application must include the following: 

1. Resume 
2. Cover letter 
3. Five published work samples
