The following message was sent to the campus community from President Marty Martin on Nov. 17, 2025.

I am deeply saddened to share that Bill Knapp, a dear friend and one of the University’s most devoted benefactors, passed away Saturday at the age of 99.

Bill was a longtime member of the University’s Board of Trustees, serving from 1976–2006. In 1992, he received the Drake University Distinguished Service Medal—Drake’s highest honor—in recognition of his dedication to the institution, and, in 2008, he was honored with the designation of trustee emeritus. Bill served as a trusted confidante and advisor to many Drake University presidents. I am deeply grateful for the friendship he extended to me.

Over the course of five decades, Bill contributed more than $8 million to the University. One of the most visible testaments of his generosity is the William C. Knapp Center. He also supported transformational Drake projects such as the Science Connector building, the basketball practice facility, the Harkin Institute, and the Roger Knapp Tennis Center, which was named in honor of his late son who served as the Drake men’s tennis coach from 1989–1994. In addition, Bill generously supported the Robert D. And Billie Ray Center, Drake Athletics, the Bulldog Club, and the Drake Sustainability Fund. The enduring impact of Bill’s generosity will be felt by the community for generations to come.

Bill’s legacy extends far beyond our campus. He devoted his all to improving lives and strengthening his community and is regarded as one of our state’s most respected philanthropists and influential leaders. Born just three years before the start of the Great Depression, Bill grew up on his family’s farm in southern Iowa and learned how to make the most out of every opportunity. His life journey took him from humble beginnings to the U.S. Navy to founding one of the state’s premier real estate companies. Throughout his success, Bill never lost sight of his values and remained rooted in his commitment to giving back. His generous and kind nature is one we can all strive to emulate.

Please join me in extending heartfelt condolences to Bill’s wife, Susan, and the Knapp family. Let us honor Bill’s legacy by working every day to make a difference in the lives of others.

Sincerely,

Marty
