The workshop, A Journalist’s Guide to New Media, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13, and is sponsored by Drake’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Several workshop sessions will focus on new media tools, including RSS feeds, Twitter, blogs and Facebook, and how these tools have changed the way journalists research, network with other professionals and even manage job searches.
The schedule for the workshop, which will be held in room 104 of Meredith Hall, 2805 University Ave., is listed below:
- 8-8:30 a.m. — Coffee Reception
- 8:30-10:30 a.m. — Your New Media Tool Kit: Chris Snider of DesMoinesRegister.com will discuss online tools every journalist and professional communicator needs to know.
- 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. — Using the Tools: Chris Snider will lead a hands-on workshop on efficiently using and organizing online information with RSS Feeds, Google Alerts and other online tools.
- 12:30-1 p.m. — Lunch break
- 1-3 p.m. — Social Media: Nathan Wright of Lava Row will present a hands-on workshop on getting the most out of social media, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. Using the tools to link effectively with clients, other professionals and potential employers.
- 3-3:15 p.m. — Break
- 3:15-5 p.m. — Blogging: Pete Jones of DesMoinesIsNotBoring.com and Chris Snider. Jones will discuss what he’s learned from his blog, followed by a hands-on workshop on creating your own blog.
Cost for the workshop is $100, which includes a coffee reception and lunch. Pre-registration is recommended due to limited seating. Participants are welcome to pay at the door and checks should be payable to Drake University.
