Congratulations to Professor Staub on being named SJMC dean!

Dr. Catherine Staub, the Peggy Fisher and Larry Stelter Chair of Magazine Journalism, has been named the next dean of the Drake School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Staub will begin her new role next July when the current dean, Kathleen Richardson, retires. Staub joined the SJMC faculty in 2015. Prior to moving into academia, she worked as an associate editor at Meredith Corporation and founded her own content marketing agency, Lexicon. Staub will be the eighth SJMC dean since the School was founded in 1962. Journalism education at Drake began in 1919.

Upper Midwest Emmy contest to open

Submit your best video work in 2020 and 2021 to the Upper Midwest Emmy Awards contest. Deadline for entries is Feb. 4, 2022. See Professor Sandy Henry if you are interested in submitting something.

Attend a video panel Dec. 2

The Drake SJMC will be hosting a video panel 7-8 p.m. on Dec. 2 to help our students learn more about opportunities in the local film and video scene. Panelists will discuss what opportunities exist for Drake students as well as how students can connect.

Summer study-abroad opportunity available

Dean Gesine Gerhard (Arts and Sciences) and SJMC emerita faculty Dorothy Pisarski are co-leading a summer travel seminar. Entitled Heritage and Holocaust, the class will travel to Germany and Poland departing May 30, 2022. The trip is cross-listed both as HIST 099 with a Historical Foundations AOI, and INTD. Alumni note

Abby Buell, JO’05, who was a marketer and producer in New York City’s theatrical and performing arts field for 16 years, has joined San Diego Repertory Theatre as its new managing director.

New jobs available in dean’s office

The SJMC dean’s office is looking for new student workers to help with a special project.  If you are interested, please stop by Mallory Quinn’s office (119 Meredith Hall) to pick up an application.  All applications are due by next Tuesday, Nov. 23.
