Welcome to JMC Days 2021!

This week is JMC Days, the annual celebration of all things SJMC. The schedule of JMC Days events:

Tuesday, Nov. 2: First Amendment Celebration Day, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Join the Freedom Celebration Station outside of Meredith Hall to create posters and chalk sidewalks for various causes while celebrating First Amendment freedoms.

Wednesday, Nov. 3: Professionalism Day.

Noon-1:30 p.m.: Celebrate the PR major’s reaccreditation with pizza in Mer. 124C.
2-4 p.m.: Visit the Job Preparation Workshop in Mer. 4. Get feedback on resumes, have your professional headshot take and learn job-search websites like Handshake and Linkedin.
Virtual: See interviews with SJMC alums sharing professional tips.

Thursday, Nov. 4: Networking Day

10-11 a.m.: Share donuts with broadcast professionals in Mer. 125 and learn about jobs in the industry.
1-3 p.m.: Drop by the Innovation Studio in Mer. 124C and create buttons and stickers for JMC Days.
5-7 p.m.: Network in a low-key setting with area professionals with Mocktails and Mingling in Mer. 104.

SJMC senior wins women’s leadership scholarship

Digital media production senior Autumn Osia has been selected as a 2021-22 recipient of Drake’s Deni Druehl Naumann Women’s Leadership Scholarship. According to the selection committee, the scholarship was established by Deni Druehl, JO’78, and Michael Naumann “to recognize women student leaders who inspire, have passion and positively impact the lives of others around them.  The student selected for this award must exhibit a commitment to applying their leadership skills and talents to Drake activities such as the Adams Leadership Institute, recognized campus student organizations, and/or University sponsored activities, such as Residence Life, Panhellenic Council, and/or Student Senate.” Autumn is on the Board of Student Communications, she is an assistant residence hall coordinator and former resident assistant, photo editor for the Times-Delphic, and SJMC office assistant.

PRSA conference offers free registration for students

The Public Relations Society of America Midwest District Conference will be held virtually Nov. 15-19. Registration is free for students with a drake.edu email address. See https://prsamdc.org/district-conference for more information and to register.

Alumni update

A new program in Colorado will provide up to three free mental health counseling sessions each year for Coloradans ages 18 and younger. Liz Owens, JO’05, director of policy and communications at the Colorado Office of Behavioral Health, lobbied for the bill and is instrumental in launching the program.
