The Drake Constitutional Law Center will celebrate Constitution Day in conjunction with its annual Constitutional Law Symposium this year. The public is invited to join the September 21, 2019 event on campus in Cartwright Hall. Those unable to join the event in person are encouraged to register for the webcast.
The fall 2019 symposium will highlight the new book Democracy and Dysfunction (The University of Chicago Press) by Jack Balkin, the Knight Professor of Constitutional Law and First Amendment at Yale Law School, and Sandy Levinson, the W. St. John Garwood and W. St. John Garwood Jr. Centennial Chair in Law at the University of Texas Law School. The book is a series of letters between the two scholars which debate current constitutional issues of significance to the functioning of American democracy.
The following scholars will present their perspectives on the debate, as well:
- Franita Tolson, Professor of Law at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law
- Frank Buckley, Foundation Professor of the Antonin Scalia Law School of George Mason University
- Leah Litman, Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Michigan
- David Pozen, Professor of Law at Columbia Law School
Mark Kende, Director of the Drake Constitutional Law Center, and the James Madison Chair in Constitutional Law will add to the dialogue, covering digital platforms, freedom of speech, and democratic dysfunction.
Miguel Shor, Associate Director of the Drake Constitutional Law Center and Professor of Law, will present a historical perspective on the debate.
According to Professor Kende, this symposium is, “a rare opportunity to see some of the nation’s leading legal scholars discuss and disagree about some of the core issues facing a polarized nation. And, the audience will have the chance to ask questions—so it will be an exciting event.”
The program has been approved for 3.0 Iowa CLE hours. The proceedings of the symposium will be published in Drake Law Review. Attendees may elect to purchase a copy upon registration for the event.
