Urban Plains sweeps BEA category
Student work published on the senior capstone website Urban Plains swept the “small team” category at this year’s Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts. The winners were:
- 1st Place: Matthew Gogerty, Adam Rogan and Autumn Meyer; “500 Miles on 500 Dollars”
- 2nd Place: Autumn Meyer and Daniela Buvat; “Save the Bees, Seriously”
- 3rd Place: Anne Marie Matte, Nate Sohn and Autumn Meyer; “Abandoned Midwest”

Writing Workshop and Speaking Center open for business
The Writing Workshop and the Speaking Center open for the semester today. The workshops are staffed by peer tutors. The writing tutors help students identify areas of difficulty and work with them on a range of issues, including fluency, organization, development, analysis and argument. Speaking tutors assist students in selecting and narrowing topics, organizing ideas, drafting and revising an outline, preparing visual aids and practicing delivery. Students can also reserve the speaking studio to practice and record presentations.

SJMC grad student featured in Seattle Times article
Chantel Osahor, a student in SJMC’s master’s program and assistant coach for the Drake women’s basketball team, was the subject of a profile in the Seattle Times. Chantel, a former Washington Huskies basketball standout, was nominated for MTRWestern Sports Star of the Year.
Alumni nominated for local ad awards
Three SJMC alums have been nominated for American Advertising Federation of Des Moines awards:
- Caleb Bailey, JO’10, digital strategist/media buyer at Strategic America, is nominated for Ad Pro of the Year.
- Chad Baker, JO’97, MA’98, vice president/creative at Meyocks, is nominated as Silver Medalist of the year.
- Hope Waggoner, JO’16, media planner/buyer at Two Rivers Marketing, is nominated for Rookie of the Year.
The winners will be announced at the annual dinner on Feb. 24.
Passionate speakers wanted!
The Student Activities Board and Student Alumni Association are collaborating to put on an event called the Last Lecture Series. The Last Lecture Series will bring students and alumni together to share the impactful values and experiences they have received from their time at Drake, as well as how they have used these tools to give back to the world in return. This event will feature four alumni and two senior student speakers. We are looking for motivated, passionate, excited speakers who can share their perspective.

Scholarship application deadline looms
Applications for SJMC scholarships and awards are available on the table outside Mer. 119. There are scholarships available for the 2018-2019 academic year for all majors. The Professor Richard Tapscott Reporting Award recognizes outstanding student news reporting work in any medium and comes with a cash award. Seniors can apply for the Tapscott award. The application deadline for these scholarships and awards is Monday, Feb. 19.
