On Monday, Oct. 28, Drake University will host its 20th annual Halloween Hoops Party for Des Moines area children ages 3–11. The event will be held in the Bell Center on the Drake University campus at 1421 27th Street from 6–8 p.m.
Russ Lovell, professor of law at Drake University Law School, and basketball legend Dolph Pulliam have been partnering on this event for twenty years in support of providing fun and safe activities for neighborhood kids. Pulliam will return this year to be part of the festivities at the event.
The party will feature games, including musical chairs, piñatas, and 6’ high baskets for those children who want to shoot hoops. There will be Halloween music and decorations, pizza, candy, and a face-painting station. Costumes are encouraged, but not required. If children do not have a costume to wear, they are encouraged to wear something orange and visit the face-painting station.
“It is a great time for the little kids, and the Drake Law students who put on the party enjoy it just as much” says Lovell. “It reminds you that being a kid can really be a lot of fun.”
Other supporters of the event include the Des Moines National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Drake Law School Student Bar Association, the Drake University Office of Community Engagement and Service Learning, the Drake University Law School Public Service Scholars, Public Interest Law Association, and Delta Theta Phi fraternity.
