Children sporting their Beggar’s Night apparel are invited to join the fun at the 17th annual Drake University Community Halloween Hoops Shoot Out, set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, at the Bell Center, 1421 27th St.

The event, which is free and open to Des Moines-area children ages 3-12, offers numerous contests — Free Throws, Lay Ups, Over the Backboard Shot and just plain old Halloween fun. There also will be face painting, pinatas and awards, along with pizza, soda pop and candy.

Drake law professor Russ Lovell and Drake basketball legend Dolph Pulliam will host the event, which is co-sponsored by the Drake Law School Student Bar Association and the Des Moines branch of the NAACP. Volunteers from Delta Theta Phi professional law fraternity, Equal Justice Works and Public Service Scholars are scheduled to assist with the event.

Participants are encouraged to wear costumes and to bring their own basketball, mini-basketball or Nerf-style ball.
