Drake Engaged Citizen Series to present lecture featuring local minister

Mark Stringer, an advocate for marriage equality, will give a lecture titled “Open to Life, Expecting to Love, Prepared to Serve,” at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16.

The lecture is free and open to the public and will be held in Bulldog Theater on the lower level of Olmsted Center, 2875 University Ave.

Stringer, who has served as minister at the First Unitarian Church of Des Moines since 2001, will share his experiences as a supporter of marriage equality and offer his perspective on the connection between religious faith and political activism.

He serves on the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa Board and was chairman from 2004 – 2006. He is also a member of Faithful Voices, an organization of religious-minded Iowans that support same-sex marriage.

In 2007, he received the Unitarian Universalist Association Westwood Grant, an award that is presented to ministers who show exceptional entrepreneurial spirit in congregational leadership over a period of five years.

This lecture is sponsored by Drake University’s Engaged Citizen Experience program. The theme for spring 2010 is “Religion, Reason and the Republic: What Role do Faith and Science Play in Shaping Democracy?”
