Translation expert Lucy Hong Wang will give a bilingual
reading and discussion with Carol Spaulding-Kruse, Drake University associate
professor of English, on Thursday, Feb. 19.

This presentation, titled “A Practical Explanation of
Theories of Translation,” will begin at 3:30 p.m. in room 308 of Howard
Hall, 2515 University Ave.  This
event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Drake Writers
and Critics Series.

The discussion will focus on how writers and translators
negotiate the translation of a work. Wang will offer three translations of the
revered Chinese novel “Dream of the Red Chamber” as basis for
discussing theoretical approaches.

Wang and Spaulding will also discuss how they are working
together to translate one of Spaulding’s own short stories into Mandarin.

Wang is a professor in the areas of English and composition
at Tianjin Normal University in Tianjin, China. She is visiting Drake as part
of the Drake International Faculty Exchange.
