Grammy-winning blues artist to headline President Maxwell’s 70th Birthday bash

Drake University President David Maxwell will celebrate his 70th birthday by jamming with a Grammy Award-winning blues musician.

The free concert headlined by blues legend John Paul Hammond will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, in Sheslow Auditorium. The event is open to the public, and no tickets are required.

Maxwell has been rehearsing for a duet with Hammond, whose lengthy list of musical collaborators includes Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Muddy Waters.

In addition to celebrating Maxwell’s 70th, the concert is one in a series of events to mark Maxwell’s final year as Drake’s president. Maxwell recently previewed his guitar skills by performing the National Anthem prior to the Drake-Bowling Green men’s basketball game in the Knapp Center:
