Drake University’s RaySociety is offering 25 informative and thought-provoking classes for lifelong learners this fall. Membership in the RaySociety is available to people of all ages and backgrounds for $50. Classes cost an average of $30 with access to additional free events.
The course Perspectives on Race: The Immigrant Experience opens with its first session “Establishing a New Life in Iowa’s Capital City,” this Wednesday, September 11 at 9:30 a.m. in the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates, 100 Locust Street Des Moines. The session features former Ambassador Kenneth Quinn, president of the World Food Prize.
Courses range from one to six sessions, taught by current and retired Drake faculty as well as community leaders. Other fall courses include:
• Economic Roundtable with Tom Root, a four-session course
• Ghost Towns of Dallas County, a free single-session class
• Celtic Music, a four session series
• Fall Gardening with Elvin McDonald, a free single-session class
• Faculty Research at Drake University, a four-session course
• Exploring the Media: Iowa Newspapers, a four session course
The society takes its name from two distinguished Drake alumni: Robert Ray, who also served as the University’s president, and Billie Ray, former teacher and first lady of Iowa. The society’s motto is ‘expand your mind, extend your network.’
