Drake students compete in national pharmacy challenge

A team of students in the Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences will compete in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy’s (AACP) Clinical Pharmacy Challenge quarterfinals on Oct. 20 in Hollywood, Fla. The group beat out teams from across the country to be one of just eight organizations to compete. This the first time a Drake team has made
it this far in the annual competition.

Geoff Wall, professor of pharmacy practice, coaches the group. The following students, all P4s, participated:

    Caitlin Schaapveld
    Nate Verlinden
    Jessica Poehls
    Michael Lahart

“Doing well in the Challenge is not only a source of pride for the students and their school, but also can be a valuable addition on the students’ resume as they move forward in their career,” Wall says.

The ACCP Clinical Pharmacy Challenge pits teams of students from schools and colleges of pharmacy from across the United States against each other in a “quiz bowl” type format. Students are tested on their pharmacy knowledge and their ability to apply that information clinically. Preliminary rounds were conducted virtually in September. The quarterfinal, semifinal, and final rounds will be held at the AACP Annual Meeting. The winning team receives a $1,500 award.
