“Currently, 70 volunteer tutors meet one-to-one with adult new readers at the Adult Literacy Center,” said Anne Murr, coordinator of the center. “With community support, these learners expand their lives in ways most of us take for granted. Contributions help volunteers invest in the community, one life at a time.”
To help support literacy, customers simply present a special flier at the time of their purchase to show that they want to assist the Adult Literacy Center. A link to the flier appears on the Drake School of Education Web site. Link: http://www.educ.drake.edu/webpdfs/B&N_voucher.pdf
Shoppers will have the opportunity to enjoy free cookies and meet Drake’s mascot, Spike the Bulldog. Buddy, the dog that won the most recent Beautiful Bulldog Contest and served as official mascot of the 2008 Drake Relays, also will make an appearance.
Plus, children will be invited to snuggle with and read to a certified therapy dog. In addition, shoppers will have the chance to chat with Steven Pritchard, a student at the center and the author of “Disabled Thoughts.”
Before leaving the store, shoppers may stop by the center’s table and have their purchases gift wrapped in return for a good-will donation.
The Drake Adult Literacy Center’s mission is to improve literacy among adults, resulting in enhanced self-esteem, daily living and life-long learning.
