Tell us about yourself.
My name is Alondra Flores-Espino, I am a junior majoring in clinical and medical health sciences and nursing, with a minor in psychology. I am the middle child of two immigrant parents from Michoacan, Mexico, and I was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. I graduated from Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa, in 2023 and committed to Drake University right after. I grew up in a catholic household and was confirmed three years ago. I am bilingual, fluent in English and Spanish.
What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?
Hispanic Heritage Month to me means a month filled with everything that represents who I am and the Hispanic community. The bright colored flags, food, dancing, music, and language are just a few of the things I love. The month is a beautiful reminder of who I am and where my ancestors come from, as well as a time to celebrate with my friends and family.
Why did you choose to attend Drake?
Drake University’s inspiration and mission were one of many things that led me to choose Drake. I felt very supported, welcomed, and cared for by Drake’s staff during my time trying to decide where I wanted to complete my undergraduate degree. Committing to Drake also allowed me to stay close to my loved ones which was important to me.
What is your favorite thing about Drake?
My favorite thing about Drake is the vibrant, diverse, and engaging environment on campus. Drake Relays are also one of my favorite things. It’s a fun week to look forward to!

In what ways have you grown since coming to Drake?
I’ve grown academically and mentally since coming to Drake. I’ve gained a lot of knowledge and skills, and learned how to cope with mental challenges that sometimes come with college life.
What do you hope to do after you graduate?
After I graduate, I hope to move out of the U.S. for a while, get my dream job and truck, and eventually become wealthy enough to help others in need.
Who has been some of your important mentors during your time at Drake?
My parents and older sister have been some important mentors to me during my time at Drake. Their unconditional support and motivation to work hard is priceless.
Are you involved in any student organizations, groups, or community service work? Tell us about those experiences.
Yes, I am a Crew Scholar and hold the logistics position in La Fuerza Latina at Drake University. Crew has been a big support system to me on campus and has allowed me to create meaningful relationships and gain leadership skills. I joined La Fuerza Latina in spring of 2025 and it has enhanced my leadership skills, made me feel close to my culture on campus, and I’ve enjoyed working collaboratively with everyone in LFL to plan events.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life, and what lessons did that person teach you?
My biggest influence has been my older sister Kenia, she’s very determined, hardworking, and smart. She’s currently pursuing a master’s degree at The University of Nebraska and is a sergeant in the Reserves. She’s my daily reminder that you can do anything you put your mind to, and failure only teaches you.
