Drake University’s Assistant Professor of Low Brass Grady McGrannahan will present a chamber recital, which will feature McGrannahan on instruments including tenor trombone, euphonium and bass trombone. The event, which is free and open to the public, will start at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, on the Jordan Stage in Sheslow Auditorium in Old Main, 2507 University Ave.
The program will consist of three pieces. The first work is a Mozart Sonata for Bassoon and Cello. McGrannahan will play the bassoon part on tenor trombone and Assistant Professor of Music Ashley Sidon will play the cello.
The second piece is Victor Ewald’s Quintet No. 3 for Brass Quintet.
“Normally, trombonists will play this piece, but after looking into it, I found out that Ewald’s intended instrumentation was all conical bored instruments,” McGrannahan said. Instead of playing the trombone, he will play the euphonium, while two trumpet players will play the cornet.
The final piece, which is Nick Woud’s Serenade for bass trombone and four tenor trombones, will feature McGrannahan on bass trombone with the accompaniment of four students.
The chamber recital is being given in partial fulfillment of the Doctor of Music degree in Trombone Performance from Florida State University, where McGrannahan is a doctoral candidate.
