The Iowa Architectural Foundation will host a tour of the Oreon E. Scott Chapel as part of its third annual architecture month lecture series. This year’s theme is “Sacred Spaces,” an exploration of how architecture and faith intersect. Five sacred spaces were chosen to represent unique architectural styles and faith groups.

The Oreon E. Scott Chapel tour will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7. The lecture will begin in room 115 of Medbury Hall, 2730 Forest Ave. and the tour will follow.

The Iowa Architectural Foundation tour will include a short presentation by Maura Lyons, associate professor of art and design and curator of the “Building a Modern Campus: Eliel & Eero Saarinen at Drake University” exhibit. Lyons will address the particular style of architecture represented by the space, how faith influences the building and how the building influences the service. Guided tours will be followed with a question and answer session.

Oreon E. Scott Memorial Chapel was dedicated in 1955 as a place “of worship to preaching, to communion, to meditation, to searching of the soul and renewal of the spirit of those who would be spiritual guides to others.” Originally designed to be the chapel for Drake’s Divinity School, it has served as a place of contemplation for both Christians and non- Christians alike.
