Drake University will host legendary writer Ivan Doig, who will read from and speak about his work, on Monday, April 19.
Doig’s presentation, which is part of the Authors Visiting in Des Moines (AViD) Series, will begin at 7 p.m. in Sheslow Auditorium in Old Main, 2507 University Ave.
Drake President David Maxwell will moderate the event, which is free and open to the public.
Doig, who was born in Montana in 1939, grew up along the Rocky Mountain Front that has inspired much of his writing. The grandson of homesteaders, he was the son of a ranch hand and a ranch cook.
His first book and memoir, “This House of Sky: Landscapes of a Western Mind,” was a finalist for the National Book Award when it was published in 1978. Since then, his many books that followed have received numerous prizes. His additional titles include “Dancing at Rascal Fair,” “Heart Earth,” “The Whistling Season” and “The Eleventh Man.”
The AViD Author Series is organized by the Des Moines Public Library Foundation and sponsored by Drake University, Humanities Iowa, Nationwide, Wells Fargo, Iowa History Center at Simpson College and Douglas and Deborah West.
