SJMC students are encouraged to participate in a survey that will be administered this week in all SJMC classes. Our SJMC diversity plan requires a periodic assessment be conducted to better understand the views of SJMC students, to help guide curriculum decisions and to ensure we are creating a welcoming climate for all. The information we collect also provides valuable data for accreditation reporting. The survey should only take a few minutes to complete. Please answer the questions as accurately as possible. Seniors: Reserve your SJMC centennial T-shirt
Attention SJMC seniors!
To celebrate the centennial of journalism education at Drake AND your graduation, the SJMC has commissioned a special SJMC centennial T-shirt. The T-shirts will be available during a screening event by The Side Garage on the Friday afternoon of Drake Relays, April 29. You can screen your own shirt OR we can screen it for you to pick up later.
T-shirts must be pre-ordered, so that we can have correct sizes on hand. Send your name and what size you want to SJMC administrative assistant Denise Ganpat (denise.ganpat@drake.edu) PRIOR TO MARCH 14.
SJMC grad wins Broadcast Education Association award
Allaire Nuss, JO’21, has won a top honor in the international Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts. Nuss won an Award of Excellence in the Specialty Program/Podcast category of the audio competition. The acceptance rate in the competition was 20 percent. Nuss’ entry was her podcast “Dead. Moines,” which she created for the senior capstone Urban Plains. She is now an associate entertainment and home editor at Dotdash Meredith.
SJMC students nominated for Midwest Emmys
Two Drake SJMC students have been nominated for Upper Midwest Emmys in the student competition of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The winners will be announced during an awards ceremony on April 1.
Senior Autumn Osia has been nominated for an Emmy in the Arts and Entertainment/Cultural Affairs category. Junior Kayla Hartman has been nominated in the Sports Story category.

Experimental filmmaker to speak
Filmmaker and film scholar Christopher Harris will speak on Thursday, March 10, 5-6 p.m. in the Cowles Library Reading Room. Harris is associate professor of film and video production at the University of Iowa. His website describes his films and video installations as reading “African-American historiography through the poetics and aesthetics of experimental cinema.” The lecture is part of the English Department’s Glaspell Writer and Critics Series.
Drake Working Worldwide accepting applications
Do you have plans for after graduation? Interested in living and working abroad? Look no further than Working Worldwide, an opportunity for recent graduates to live and work in Kosovo for a year. Applications are now live, and you can apply in Terra Dotta. Application deadline is April 1.
Information sessions will be held throughout March, including March 7 at 4:00pm in Meredith 103. Additional sessions will be announced in the Campus Calendar.
