Drake Political Review is looking for writers, EFR editor
Interested in writing for Drake Political Review this semester? Check out the Fall 2021 story list, and query for a story by 11:59 p.m., Sept. 19. Read through the list of available stories and submit one query at a time. You may query for more than one story but remember that stories are semester-long commitments. If you’re assigned to write an article, you’ll hear back Tuesday, Sept. 21. You will have plenty of guidance throughout the process of writing for DPR, and you do not necessarily need journalistic writing experience to query for a story. We want writers with varying ideologies and experience levels, and they should be excited to contribute to a student publication!
Drake Political Review is also looking for a First-Year Assistant Editor to join the staff. All first-year students are eligible to apply, but ideal candidates are deadline driven, politically minded and team-oriented. The First-Year Assistant Editor will coach writers, edit articles and attend staff meetings throughout the 2021-22 school year. Learn more about the position and apply here. Public relations scholarship available
The $1,500 Ferne Bonomi and Dr. Henry Milam Undergraduate Scholarship is available for a current Public Relations Student Society of America member. Reading service hiring weekend broadcast assistant
The statewide Iowa Radio Reading Information Service for the Blind and Print Handicapped is hiring a weekend broadcast assistant. IRIS is the local organization with which SJMC’s beginning reporting and writing class partners on a service-learning project every semester. Details of the paid weekend position:
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensure continuous delivery of IRIS programming by:
- Preparing reading materials and studios for volunteer readers.
- Greeting and directing office visitors and volunteers.
- Reading on air and recording content as needed.
- Editing programs to exact time and optimal sound quality and volume.
- Uploading completed programs for broadcast and podcast pages.
- Monitoring equipment to ensure optimal sound quality, balance and volume.
- Identifying, reporting and troubleshooting issues with IRIS broadcast and internet signals.
Maintain IRIS’s warm and welcoming culture by:
- Responding promptly to volunteer communications and inquiries.
- Providing support needed by volunteers while they are reading or producing programs.
- Sharing volunteer issues and concerns with the Executive Director.
- Hours: As Needed Saturdays and/or Sundays, 8:15 a.m.–12:15 p.m.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND APTITUDES:
Reliable transportation to and from office.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google, online calendars and other internet products.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent organizational skills with adherence to deadlines.
Experience with or Ability to learn audio editing software (Audacity).
Pleasant reading voice.
Knowledge of current events.
COMPENSATION: $10/hour

NPR post-graduate fellowships available
The yearlong NPR Kroc Fellowship is open for applications through Nov. 15. Three fellows are selected each year and receive hands-on training in audio and digital journalism, including writing, reporting, producing and editing. Applicants must be recent graduates but previous journalism experience is not required. More information can be found here.

Pulliam Journalism fellowships open
The 2022 Pulliam Journalism Fellowship welcomes applications for next year’s program. Twenty winners nationwide will be chosen for a paid 10-week internship next summer at the Indianapolis Star and Arizona Republic news organizations as reporters, photographers and digital/social media specialists. Dow Jones internship applications open
The Dow Jones News Fund invites college students to apply for paid summer 2022 internships in data journalism, digital media, business reporting and multiplatform editing. The application deadline is Nov. 5.
The News Fund will select college journalists for internships with more than 50 news organizations across the country. Those selected will also benefit from week-long, pre-internship training, $1,500 scholarships, memberships to journalism groups and access to the DJNF alumni network for jobs and mentoring.
To be considered, students must apply by Nov. 5, and take a timed, online qualifying test. There are four training tracks; students may apply for one or more.
- Data Journalism: Those who love logic and numbers with an appetite for investigative journalism are encouraged to apply for this program. The training covers how to make government records requests, analyze and clean data and use computer-assisted reporting to tell compelling stories. Interns are placed at well-respected newspapers, digital publications and nonprofit news sites.
- Digital Media: Interns will build their professional portfolios at newspapers, news websites or TV or radio stations. Pre-internship training equips interns to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving media ecosystem, including tips and tools for working with video, audio, data visualization, web analytics, social media and more.
- Business Reporting: Strong reporters and writers with an eagerness to dive into an exciting beat should apply for the business reporting program. Interns spend a week drilling down on finance, investing, labor issues and mergers and acquisitions before beginning work for daily newspapers, niche publications, newswires and American City Business Journals’ newsweeklies.
- Multiplatform Editing: Students who are passionate about accuracy, fact-checking, grammar and spelling should apply for the multiplatform editing program. During training, interns hone their visual design, headline writing and line editing skills; help publish high-quality print and digital products on deadline; and strengthen their news judgment before working for newspapers, digital publications and nonprofit news sites.
DJNF will host two information sessions about the application and selection process, as well as two test prep sessions. Students or faculty can sign up here to attend or to request recordings.
