Professor Staub nominated for Teacher of Year
Congratulations to associate professor Catherine Staub, who has been nominated for the annual Levitt Teacher of the Year award. Staub is the Fisher-Stelter Chair of Magazine Journalism and runs the E.T. Center for Magazine Journalism. She teaches undergraduate magazine media and SJMC core classes, and also in the Master of Arts in Communication program.
DMP senior chosen for radio-TV future leader series
Digital Media Production senior Bailey Coronis was chosen to participate in the highly selective International Radio and Television Society Fellowship Program! Unfortunately, the fellowship program was canceled this summer because of the pandemic. Instead, Bailey will be a member of the inaugural IRTS Future Media Leader Accelerator Series, which will include two virtual sessions every week with media executives and one-on-one mentoring. Students who complete the program receive a spotlight on the IRTS website, a certificate, future mentoring, networking and guidance, and will be named a 2020 IRTS Future Media Industry All Star.
Bailey is also working with the Bloomington Convention and Visitors Bureau as a video production intern.

K.C. ad groups hosting career webinar
American Advertising Federation Kansas City (AAF-KC) and Ad 2 KC are partnering to host “Career Advice During COVID,” a webinar for soon-to-be and recently graduated students, on Thursday, June 4 at 5 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to ask AAF-KC partner recruiters questions in a live Q&A-style discussion. They’ll cover tips on networking to nailing the job interview, and everything in between.

1984 alum launches effort to save Chicago media
Tracy Baim, JO’84, was recently profiled in an article in Chicago’s Newcity magazine. Baim is a longtime Chicago journalist and LGBTQ activist, publisher of Windy City Times and Chicago Reader, filmmaker and book author. She is also organizing an effort to save Chicago’s independent media.
Federal grants available for COVID-19 expenses
Drake has announced that current students are eligible for up to $6,000 in emergency funding to defray expenses incurred because of the pandemic. According to the University’s announcement, “These grants can only be used for student expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care and child-care expenses.”
