IEREA Conference 2017

Drake University School of Education doctoral students and faculty recently attended the Iowa Education Research and Evaluation Associate (IEREA) conference at the ACT Center in Iowa City, IA on December 1. IEREA is the state association for the national professional organization – the American Education Research Association (AERA). Several doctoral students, faculty, and recent graduates of the SOE doctoral program presented at the conference and received awards for their research. Dr. Megan Knight and Dr. Joe Spiess received Excellence in Research Awards for their submissions to the Distinguish Research Paper Award.

Dr. Knight’s paper was based on her dissertation research and titled A Phenomenology Examining High School Teachers’ Perceptions of the Effects of Standards-Based Grading on Planning, Instruction, Assessment, and Classroom Management. Dr. Spiess’s paper also based on his dissertation research was titled Examining the Relationship between Beliefs about Mindset, Beliefs about Knowledge, and Cultural Proficiency Development for K-12 Public School Teachers. In addition to the Excellence in Research Awards, the Drake SOE doctoral group received 3 research awards for best posters. Titles and authors are listed below:

  • Dr. Sara Coleman and Dr. Robyn Cooper, Qualitative Best Research Poster Award for A Case Study on the Life Trajectories of Women with Sensory and Mobility Disabilities in STEM Careers.

  • Dr. Joe Spiess and Dr. Robyn Cooper, Quantitative Best Research Poster Award for Examining the Relationship between Beliefs about Mindset, Beliefs about Knowledge, and Cultural Proficiency Development for K-12 Public School Teachers
  • Dr. Megan Knight, Qualitative Research Poster Award for A Phenomenology Examining High School Teachers’ Perceptions of the Effects of Standards-Based Grading on Planning, Instruction, Assessment, and Classroom Management.

Alyssa Harrell and Dr. Cooper also presented a research poster and roundtable on College Students Experiences with Stress and Wellness.
