Training for journalists covering sexual violence
All are welcome to attend the Public Affairs Reporting class this week during sessions devoted to how journalists can cover sexual violence responsibly and ethically.
On Tuesday, Oct. 10, advocates from the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault and the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence will present a media guide to students and discuss approaching and interviewing victims.
On Thursday, Oct. 12, Des Moines Register reporter Courtney Crowder and Caleb Byers, a sexual assault survivor whom Crowder profiled this summer, will talk about how that story came to be. They will be joined by a state prosecutor who prosecutes sex crimes.
The class meets in Meredith 125, 12:30-1:45 p.m. No RSVP needed; we have plenty of room. Questions? See Jill Van Wyke.

Real-life exercise in brand sampling
What happens when the class topic is brand audits and you find out there’s brand sampling occurring on campus? You take your class to the sampling!
Ad professor Dorothy Pisarski took her JMC 113 students to Olmsted while the Coke Zero Sugar sampling was taking place. Students were able to ask the marketing team questions about their schedules, the series of sampling events, and the sampling analytics, in addition to tasting their samples.
