Students aren’t the only ones keeping busy during January Term. Professor Grace Provenzano, who has extensive experience as a broadcast journalist, has been doing some reporting for KCCI-TV in Des Moines.
Invitation to free film festival
Define American, a national organization dedicated to promoting discussion of immigration issues, is hosting a film festival this week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Des Moines Art Center. The festival includes a variety of documentaries and narrative films, followed by panel discussions featuring actors, filmmakers, activists and journalists.
Tickets are free (RSVP using your drake.edu account), but make reservations through this link. There will be free snacks, and all festival attendees will also be invited to a free closing night reception on Saturday at Sticks.
Help Carla celebrate her retirement!
SJMC dean’s assistant Carla McCrea is retiring on Feb. 10 after 28 years at Drake. Come wish her well at a reception on Friday, Feb. 5, from 3-4:30 p.m. in the back lobby of Meredith Hall.
Explore civic innovation at Drake event
Join Atlantic Media for an event celebrating the surge of civic innovation being seen across the country. Hosted by Atlantic Media with support from Allstate, “The Renewal Awards: Celebrating America’s Local Innovators” will take place Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Parents Hall from 9 a.m. to noon. National and local leaders will discuss their visions for their cities and the country, and also how best to support grassroots entrepreneurs who are finding creative solutions to the country’s most pressing social and economic challenges.
Atlantic Media will also recognize and honor six local innovators who are improving their communities from the ground up.
Joining the conversation will be:
