Julie’s Story and Scholarship:

Julie Vice Hagel was a Drake College of Pharmacy graduate, class of 2000, who recognized the importance of professional development and networking opportunities provided to students by participating in professional organizations and attending local, regional, state and national meetings. Julie was an active member of many professional organizations on campus and held various leadership roles in these organizations. Julie felt that these experiences played a key role in her development as a successful pharmacist. Julie dedicated a lot of time and effort to improving pharmaceutical care as a student and a practitioner. Julie had a passion for people and being a well-rounded practitioner. Travelling to professional meetings was one of the most influential factors for shaping her career and practice as a pharmacist. She valued the professional and personal opportunities available at meetings that were not possible in the classroom.

On December 30, 2014, Julie Vice Hagel lost her battle with ALS just over one year after her diagnosis. She was 39 years old. Julie passed away peacefully knowing that her friends and family would be there to support her husband Kyle (BS 95) and their beautiful children, Laura and Megan.

It was at Drake where Julie met the love of her life, Kyle Hagel. Kyle and Julie were married in 2001 in Seattle, Washington. Julie worked as a pharmacist at Kelly-Ross and taught pharmacy students at the University of Washington during the years before her children were born. Julie’s true joy in life was being a mother to Laura and Megan. She felt blessed to be able to stay at home to care for them. Julie enjoyed documenting everyday life through photos and journaling. She has left her girls a legacy of memories to help them remember so many wonderful times together and to feel connected to her deep love for them.

Julie touched so many people with her kind and generous spirit, her love for life and the people in it. She taught us all so much about courage and grace over this past year. She will be missed by many.

This award was developed to honor Julie and help provide students with opportunities to participate in professional pharmacy meetings.
