2014 JMC Days are Nov. 10-15

The School’s annual JMC Days, a celebration of all things SJMC, will be held Nov. 10-15, 2014. Look for posters around Meredith Hall with details.

All students are invited to attend classes with guest speakers.

Monday, Nov. 10

Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and author Leonard Pitts Jr. will be on campus for a public lecture at 7:30 p.m. in Sheslow Auditorium. He will also meet with editing and reporting classes at 10 a.m. in Mer. 104.

Tuesday, Nov. 11

Sarah Hinchliff Pearson, an attorney with Common Cause, will discuss intellectual property law with the Communications Law and Ethics class at 11 a.m. in Mer. 106.

Phil Roeder, director of communications for the Des Moines Public Schools, will discuss education PR with the PR Principles class at 5 p.m. in Mer. 101.

PRSSA is hosting an interactive media “pitching” workshop at 8 p.m. in Mer. 237. Give it your best shot!

Wednesday, Nov. 12

SPJ is hosting a panel with tips on how to get the internship you want at 5 p.m. in Mer. 106.

Mock interviews,  including a resume review, are being offered from 3 – 5 p.m. and followed by a networking reception at 5 p.m. all in Meredith Hall. Communications professionals from a variety of disciplines will be conducting the 30-minute interviews, and every effort will be made to line you up with a professional in your discipline.

Thursday, Nov. 13

Eric Hanson of KCCI will be speaking on writing for broadcast with JMC 54 at 9:30 a.m. in Mer. 104.

Des Moines Business Record columnist David Elbert will meet with Reporting and Writing Principles students at 10 a.m. in Mer. 104.

“Old News/New News: 220 Years of Journalistic Wisdom” Veteran journalists will discuss the changing face of journalism and how the rise of the Internet and social media have impacted the way stories are covered. SJMC Dean Kathleen Richardson will moderate a discussion featuring Larry Cotlar (Cumulus Media), Janette Larkin (Business Publications Corporation), Rekha Basu (Des Moines Register), Dave Busiek (KCCI) and Rob Dillard (Iowa Public Radio). 7 p.m. in Cowles Reading Room.

LinkedIn Workshop: Hands-on session for tips and techniques to start of enhance your LinkedIn profile and make the most of it for getting jobs and internships. Workshop will be tailored to the needs and questions of the participants. 1 p.m. in Meredith 101.
