On Nov. 13, Drake University’s Law Delts will host the 8th Annual Eat-A-Thon for Iowa-Central American Relief Effort (I-CARE). The contest will take place at Wellman’s Pub in Des Moines 7 p.m.
In the Eat-A-Thon, twelve Drake University Law School students and alumni secure pledges from donors for each chicken wing they eat and then compete to eat as many chicken wings as they can in fifteen minutes. Champions in the past have consumed over 100 chicken wings and some have earned $15 or more for every chicken wing they consumed. The event has raised $5,000 to $10,000 in each of the past seven years, and this year each contestant is competing to raise money for I-CARE and the non-profit of their choice. I-CARE will donate 50 percent of the proceeds to charities selected by the contestants including the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, Saint Jude Children’s Hospital, breast cancer research, and Byard Braley Scholarship Fund.
With the change in location to Wellman’s Pub, and the opportunity for contestants to compete for the charity or charitable project of their choice, the 8th Annual Eat-A-Thon promises to be even more fun, better attended, and more successful than ever.
“Contestants have previously competed to raise money just for I-CARE,” says Ben Parrott, I-CARE’s president. “This year, I-CARE will return50 percent of each contestant’s proceeds to the charity or charitable project of the contestant’s choice. The new format fits perfectly with I-CARE’s goal of encouraging law students to get directly and personally involved in charitable work.”
Leah Carlson, dean of the Delts, is equally excited about the new format.
“Wellman’s Pub is a Drake area favorite, and the cozy atmosphere and proximity to campus will make for an especially great time. We are very pleased to work with I-CARE to make this another great event,” says Carlson.
I-CARE is an Iowa non-profit corporation with federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, and engages in charitable projects in Central America. Donations are tax deductible and can be made securely through I-CARE’s online PayPal account. Drake University Law School students founded I-CARE in 2005.
