On Oct. 4, the Drake University College of Arts and Sciences will celebrate the generosity of University trustee Cathy (GR’86) and Steve Lacy, whose gift of $500,000 made possible recent renovations of an existing laboratory. The dedication and ribbon cutting will take place at 12:45 p.m. in the newly renamed Lacy Organic Lab in Harvey Ingham Hall.
“The Chemistry Department is extremely grateful to Cathy and Steve Lacy for their generous support of the renovation of our organic chemistry laboratories,” says Maria Bohorquez, department chair and professor of chemistry. “The newly renovated laboratory provides an extensive hands-on experience with modern instrumentation and greater interaction among students and faculty. Through the enhanced learning opportunity provided by the laboratory renovation, our students will be better prepared for their future.”
Renovation work involved reconfiguring three smaller spaces into one larger area designed to maximize natural light. The new design allows for more teaching stations, the addition of a glass writing board, and more storage space. The lab also includes energy-efficient biosafety hoods, an ADA biosafety hood, and enhanced safety showers and eyewashes.
The renovations were completed in time for students’ arrival in August.
