Drake University Provost Deneese Jones is the spring 2013 recipient of the Texas Woman’s University (TWU) Chancellor’s Alumni Excellence Award. She is being honored for her distinguished career in higher education.
Jones says her educational experiences at TWU were key to her growth and development and she is deeply honored to receive this honor. Jones earned her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from TWU, and she later earned both her Master of Education and Ph.D. in education from Texas A&M University.
Jones has worked in higher education for more than 20 years, serving in a variety of academic and administrative capacities. Her impressive list of accomplishments include: being chosen for the highly selective and prestigious American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow program, alumna of the Senior Leadership Seminar of the Virginia Women Administrators in Higher Education and the Institute for Educational Management at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, and having her research on equity pedagogy published in discipline specific academic journals, textbooks and textbook chapters, as well as technical publications. Jones has also presented at many national and international conferences throughout her academic career and is involved with numerous professional and community organizations like the American Educational Research Association where she chairs the Special Interest Group on Race, Ethnicity, Class, and Gender in Education.
In 2011, TWU Chancellor Ann Stuart donated $120,000 to fund a 20-year program to bring the two recipients of the Chancellor’s Alumni Excellence Award to campus each year to share their experience and expertise with the TWU community. Provost Jones will visit TWU on September 16-17, 2013 where she will speak at a town hall meeting, meet with several student groups in the College of Education and have a reception luncheon with honor students. A picture of Provost Jones will be hung in the TWU Alumni Hall with other previous year honorees.
