Drake University’s NEW Master’s program in Literacy Education

The School of Education enrolled the first group of teachers in the Master of Science in Literacy Education program. Through the generosity of gifs from the estates of Elizabeth Sproul, LA’54, and Helen Hazlett, the School of Education has the salary and scholarship funding for a three-year effort to launch this new degree.

Leading this program is Assistant Professor Beth Beschorner who joined the School of Education faculty to teach courses in urban literacy, assessment, and children and adolescent literature. She is currently finishing her Ph.D. in literacy at Iowa State University.

This program is focused entirely on 21st Century strategies for improving literacy. This non-thesis degree, which requires a minimum of 32 credits, is designed for teachers, literacy coaches and other educators charged with teaching and leading K-12 school reading initiatives.
