School of Education Professor Expores the Use of iPads for Literacy Learning

Visiting Professor of Literacy Education, Beth Beschorner, along with colleagues at Iowa State University, Dr. Amy Hutchison and Dr. Denise Crawford-Schmidt, recently published an article, Exploring the Use of iPads for Literacy Learning in The Reading Teacher.

This article is important to the field because iPads and similar tablets are relatively unexplored tools for literacy learning. The article exemplifies how these electronic tools can support learning in the classroom. A description of how a fourth grade teacher integrated iPads into her literacy instruction to simultaneously teach print-based and digital literacy goals is provided.

According to the International Reading Association, “The Reading Teacher is a peer-reviewed journal that provides teaching ideas to literacy educators working with children up to age 12. RT’s articles cover topics such as applying research to classroom practice and using strategies to help all learners succeed.”
