Training offered for volunteer tutors at Drake Adult Literacy Center

Volunteer tutors are needed for adults who want to improve their reading and spelling skills at the Drake University Adult Literacy Center.

Several openings remain for the January tutor training:

  • Jan. 14, 5 – 8 p.m.
  • Jan. 15, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Prospective tutors must attend both sessions, which cover the causes of reading difficulties and instructional methods found to help adult readers. The sessions will be held in room 213 of Drake’s School of Education, 3206 University Ave.

Tutors are asked to commit to tutor one person for one or two hours a week for a year or longer, if possible. All tutors receive instructional materials and ongoing support.

The center also offers short-term volunteer opportunities. Volunteers are needed to meet one-to-one with potential students to assist them in learning computer skills and to access online learning activities.

To register for the Jan. 14-15 tutor training sessions or short-term volunteer opportunities, please send an e-mail to anne.murr@drake.edu or call 515-271-3982.
