Gary Johnson, associate director of human resources at Drake University, recently received the “Excellence in Human Resource Practices Award” from the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR).

Johnson, a resident of Ames, Iowa, was honored for his work on Drake’s custom electronic performance management system.

The award was presented at the association’s annual conference in Las Vegas, Nev., along with a $2,000 cash prize, which will be contributed to the Drake scholarship endowment.

Last spring, Johnson also was honored for his work on the evaluation process during the CUPA-HR Midwest Region Conference in Branson, Mo. He received the Midwest Region Excellence in Human Resources Management Practices Award.

Johnson, who received his MBA from Drake in 1996, joined the University in 1993 as safety manager. He became assistant director of human resources in 1995 and was promoted to associate director of human resources in 2007.
