Drake’s International Film Series to feature Chinese films

Drake University’s International Film Series will kick off the fall semester on Sunday, Sept. 13, with “Woman Demon Human,” a Chinese film with English subtitles.

All films in the series are free and open to the public and will start at 2 p.m. in room 101 of Meredith Hall, 2805 University Ave.

Peiqin Zhou, associate professor of sociology at Nanjing University in China, who is teaching this year at Drake as a Fulbright Scholar, will introduce the film.

In the film, a fictional actress in a Chinese opera goes against tradition by specializing in playing male roles, especially that of Zhang Kui, a benevolent ghost appearing in several Chinese operas.

Although the actress’s career brings wealth and fame, it is attained only through considerable struggle against an anti-female system and an unhappy personal life.

Additional films and dates in the series are:
  • “Center Stage” on Sunday, Oct. 11
  • “Life Show” on Sunday, Nov. 15
The International Film Series is sponsored by Drake’s Center for Global Citizenship. For more information on this film and other upcoming events, visit the Center on Global Citizenship’s Web site at https://wwww.drake.edu/international/cgc/ or call 515-271-2117.
