More than 9,000 athletes from across the country will converge at Drake Stadium this week, participating in the track and field portion of the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympic Games. Track and field athletes will be competing in 18 different age division from Aug. 1-8.
The Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau expects an estimated 35,000 visitors will travel to central Iowa over a 14-day period for the AAU Junior Olympic Games, which began July 27.
More than 14,000 athletes, along with 2,300 coaches, from all over the United States, are participating in 21 sports in the largest annual premier multi-sport event for amateurs.
Volunteers are still needed daily for two shifts — 7:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30 to 5 p.m. — at Drake Stadium. Individuals may volunteer for one shift, one day or for an
