Shop at Barns and Noble June 6 and Support the Adult Literacy Center

Give the gift of literacy on Saturday, June 6, by shopping at Barnes and Noble at 4550 University Ave. in West Des Moines. A portion of all June 6 sales at the store will be donated to the DrakeUniversityAdultLiteracyCenter.

“Currently, 70 volunteer tutors meet one-to-one with adult new readers at the AdultLiteracyCenter,” said Anne Murr, coordinator of the center. “With community support, these learners expand their lives in ways most of us take for granted. Contributions help volunteers invest in the community, one life at a time.”

To help support literacy, customers simply present a special flier at the time of their purchase to show that they want to assist the Adult Literacy Center. Volunteers will be handing out the vouchers to customers in store. To download a copy of the voucher, visit http://www.educ.drake.edu/webpdfs/B&N_voucher2.pdf

Before leaving the store, shoppers may stop by the center’s table and have their purchases gift wrapped in return for a good-will donation.

Last December, the AdultLiteracyCenter  held a similar event at the same store. Nearly $1,400 was raised in a single Monday evening. In fact, the event was such a resounding success that the June bookfair was expanded to a full-day event.

The DrakeAdultLiteracyCenter’s  mission is to improve literacy among adults, resulting in enhanced self-esteem, daily living and life-long learning.
