Drake Law School alumni and friends are invited to gather for an exciting evening with Latin jazz genius Nachito Herrera on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Dakota Jazz Club, 1010 Nicollet, Minneapolis. The evening will begin with a reception at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7:30 and entertainment at 8. The cost is $25 per person. Please RSVP online.
Minneapolis Star-Tribune reviewer Tom Surrowicz describes Nachito Herrera as “hotter than the burning tip of a contraband Cuban cigar. Stronger than a straight shot of Havana rum. As exciting as a World Series game, with ‘El Duque’ on the mound. Explosive. Crowd pleasing. Rhythmically intense. Romantic. Dynamic. Jaw-droppingly good.”
Considered one of the world’s greatest Cuban pianists, Ignacio “Nachito” Herrera was the musical director at the famous “Tropicana” in Cuba in his twenties. In the late 1990s, he joined the famed Cubanismo as its lead pianist, arranger, and musical director while cultivating a passion, talent and reputation in Latin jazz, a striking influence in his music today.
This event is also a great opportunity to salute David Walker in his final year as dean of Drake Law School. The Dwight D. Opperman distinguished professor of law will resign as dean at the end of the 2007-08 academic year and return to the faculty. Walker has been dean since 2003 and previously served as dean from 1987 to 1996. During his second tenure as dean, the Law School experienced many positive developments in hiring new faculty, including two endowed chair positions; significant increasing alumni participation in and giving to the Law School Annual Fund; enhancing its Career Development Office; and receiving $3 million from Law School alumnus Dwight D. Opperman to further endow the Opperman Scholar Program, among many other accomplishments.
