Drake’s 126th Commencement Ceremony for Graduate and Doctoral Degree Recipients will recognize approximately 560 graduate students. The ceremony will start at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at the Drake Knapp Center. Herb Strentz, Drake professor emeritus of journalism and mass communication, will deliver the commencement address.

Strentz joined Drake in 1975 as dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and soon co-founded the Iowa Freedom of Information Council and served as its executive secretary until 2000. The National Freedom of Information Coalition and the Society of Professional Journalists selected Strentz for their “Heroes of the 50 States: The Open Government Hall of Fame” at the organizations’ annual conference in 2004. Strentz was awarded the Drake Medal of Service in 2004 and retired from Drake in 2005. He currently works as an international consultant on freedom of information and information policy issues.
