7:00 PM - 8:30 PM @ Sussman Theater\, Olmsted Center\, Drake University UPDATE: All tickets for this free event have been reserved, but we encourage you to join the wait list to be notified of future events. Please contact our office at 515-271-3623. Céline Cousteau is a French explorer, education ambassador, and documentary filmmaker. Daughter of ocean explorer and filmmaker Jean-Michel Cousteau and granddaughter of the legendary Jacques Cousteau, she describes herself simply as an "oceanaut." Having spent her entire life around the oceans and rivers of the world, Cousteau has seen how they have changed. She will spend the evening with us sharing inspiring stories and vivid photographs of the Amazon river and voyages into the deep sea. Leave with an appreciation for what is happening to the waters of the world and why it matters, even to landlocked Iowans. This event is part of the Sussman Lecture Series brought to you by the Harkin Institute for Public Policy and Citizen Engagement. Harkin Institute events are free and open to the public and last approximately 90 minutes or less.

Little Big Bangs at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider [Academics]
4:30 PM - 6:00 PM @ Harvey Ingham 102 The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, NY collides gold (Au) nuclei at an energy of 200 GeV per colliding nucleon pair with the goal of creating and studying the `quark-gluon plasma' (QGP) in the laboratory. The QGP is a unique state of strongly interacting matter that is predicted to exist at temperatures in excess of 1011 ºK when the protons and neutrons in nuclear matter dissolve, releasing the normally confined quarks and gluons. This deconfined phase of matter is similar to conditions in the early universe when it was only a few microseconds old. In this seminar I will review the remarkable and unexpected results from RHIC and what they may tell us about the properties of hot, strongly interacting nuclear matter. ?
