Drake alumna receives Golden Apple Award from Channel 13

Stacie Mitchell-Gweah, a triple degree alumna of Drake University and teacher at Callanan Middle School in Des Moines, was honored with the Golden Apple Award from Channel 13 News. The award recognizes a special teacher every month throughout the academic year.

The award honors the memory of Stanley C. Golden, founder and longtime board member of Golden Apple, whose energy, creativity, and commitment to the Golden Apple mission of advancing the teaching profession set the highest standard for dedication and accomplishment.

Mitchell-Gweah has worked as middle school teacher since January 2009, but also has extensive experience working in business. Stacie worked as an entrepreneur, business advisor, and director of Iowan Women Business Center where she managed programs that helped refugees, new immigrants, low-income, and at risk families with job placement, money management skills, microenterprise training, home ownership, and business development. Mitchell-Gweah earned her M.P.A., M.A. in teaching, and specialist in education degree all from Drake University.

Since 1986, Channel 13 has chosen ten outstanding teachers every academic year to receive the Golden Apple Award. The winners become lifetime members of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators, which creates and supports professional development programs for teachers.
