Drake Theatre presents Electra Oct. 3–Oct. 6

Drake University Theatre Department’s upcoming production of Electra is taking an old story and putting a contemporary and political spin on it.

Electra, directed by Associate Professor of Theatre Arts John Graham, runs Thursday, Oct. 3, through Sunday, Oct. 6, in the William S.E. Coleman Studio Theatre of the Harmon Fine Arts Center. Performances will start at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available online, in person, or via phone by contacting the Fine Arts Box Office, 2525 Carpenter Ave., 515-271-3841.

Graham wanted to direct a show that was rooted in the myths he loved as a kid. “This particular adaptation speaks to contemporary politics in a beautiful and powerful way,” Graham said.

Drake University senior Brenna Leilich, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Musical Theatre, portrays the title character of Electra.

She is looking forward to seeing how the audience will react to the production. “I think what’s important about this show is that it’s a very old story but this new translation really connects how some things are universal, in terms of revolution and government.”

Cast member Peyton Johnson, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Musical Theatre, plays Queen Clytemnestra and has found a sense of familiarity in the role.

When asked, Johnson said, “Actually, people call me queen, so I mean just living my life has helped me be connected to Clytemnestra thinking about hard decisions I have to make.”
